Susan- I love the insight on the courage to be lost—if only to discover serendipitously some wonderful things. I think also people underestimate the difficulty of traveling solo, particularly in the pre-internet days. This piece was a delight to read!
I too enjoy travelling solo Susan. Equally I enjoy travelling with company, but solo is different and I always look forward to it. I feel that you've nailed it with this article and your advice hits the spot. I often take photos of myself in reflections when travelling solo, that way I have an intimate record of the trip.
I will be sharing a link and preview in my weekly le bulletin this week, so my readers can enjoy it too.
Great advice and lovely photos. I haven’t travelled alone but moving around the world for over 30 years, has left me venturing on my own…a lot. I think taking photos is a great outlet as it gives a fun purpose to the days and makes one feel less alone.
Love that last photograph. I remember being on my own in New York or thrown on my own in New York but I went to the bar opposite the hotel and started talking to a guy who invited me to this gallery opening of his friend in Soho the next day. I did go, he was there and it was interesting. Stayed for a bit and then went home. I was much younger then but it was better than staying in my hotel room alone!

So true about taking photos - I do this not only when travelling but in the city where I live. It makes me really look at things.
I’m the same. I’m not professional but I just love it. Happy snapping!
Random encounters - so much better than sitting in a hotel room alone. I love that photograph too.
